Like being taken to a funky church

All right, loyal reader. It is time to get on board the Funkwagon. Was it easy finding this band? Not necessarily…at least not by doing a search for funk on ReverbNation. But then pretty frequently good things are not easy to find.

The band only has three songs up on ReverbNation and the default first song is “In My Pocket.” This is a good-time funk tune that brings to mind Sly and the Family Stone, Robert Randolph and the Family Band and Funkadelic (it is that rare song that features harmonica, just like old Funkadelic).  As if that weren’t enough, it also contains the lyrics, “It seems like every band that’s come through here lately has the same style.” Boy, ain’t that the truth.

This band certainly does not have the same style as every other band. This is a combination of gospel and funk. Now, don’t let that term gospel scare you. Whether you go to church or not, some good gospel music can really lift your spirits. That is certainly the case with Funkwagon. You’ll feel like you’re being taken to some funky church service. And it’s all right if you want to shout “Hallelujah!” or “Amen!” when you listen to this band. “If You Can’t Get Down” is one of those songs that might make you feel like you’re in the church of Reverend Cleophas in The Blues Brothers. If you can sit still during this one, you have more self-control (or perhaps you’re just more uptight) than me. You’re already in a good mood because you’ve reached the end of the work week. Why not boost your spirits even more with some good tunes that will get you moving?
