Yes, loyal reader, I know a folk singer-songwriter is a little departure from what we normally bring you. But look at the heading on this page. This site is for the musical omnivore. Besides, if music makes you feel something, it doesn’t really matter what label you slap on it.
I randomly came across Michele McGuire while browsing on Bandcamp (I’m telling you, this is a great way to discover music) and I was immediately struck by the soul in her voice. She might sing folk and Americana songs, but she could just as easily be in front of a band with a horn section and rhythms that get your backside moving. Now maybe I’m going out on a limb making this the pick of the week after having heard one song of her debut album, but I’m OK with that. These ears know soul when they hear it and Michele McGuire has it. Her debut album Mid-Western will be available next Tuesday 1 October. If you’re in the Chicago area, her album release party is on 5 October at Martyrs’.
